Spotters Report Hemphill to SA sight. Reed Kimzey recently shared a picture of a milled rear sight that had a smaller than usual H in shield. Here we have a similar sight but with the SA mark for Springfield Armory. It is unknown if it has the usual crossed cannons on opposite side which is typical of SA rear sights.

The serial number starts with a 6 and ends with a 5 with space between the numbers with two struck lines between the numbers. Interesting, but maybe not in a good way. Is that the remnant of another number under the 6? It appears to me to be a spot of original finish. See new enlarged picture.

To me the mystery and the unknown is part of what makes the M1 carbine so interesting to me. As many others have stated in the past the M1 carbine is probably one of the most if not the most underrated firearm in our history. Back when I carried an M2 in Korea back in 1968-69 I had no idea what I had in my hands.M1 Rebuild cartouche. I read that the rebuild "P" is seldom counterfeited because it lowers the value of the rifle. I also read that all Armory and contractor rebuilds outside of the U.S. were not allowed to use rebuild marks.
