Horizon walker build.

Build goals: archer with a furry friend. That's it, that's the build. Notes: requires Horizon Walker tree. Basically I took a typical ranged DPS build and, well, gimped it by investing in as many pet bonuses as I could: namely both Augment Summoning feats, most Dark Hunter wolf enhancements, and Natural Shielding from Primal Avatar. 5th Edition. Any type of Wizard would give you access to stuff like Shield and Find Familiar, as well as Arcane Recovery to stretch out your low level spell slot stamina throughout an adventuring day.

For Horizon Walker, I'd not multi class before level 11 at the very least: With Tasha's, levels 1-10 for a Ranger are pretty dope, and Horizon Walker's level 11 ability is great. A DEX S&B build would work fine as well. Take the spells that either maximize your tactics -- HWs want mobility, really -- or your character.

Rogue is always a good multiclass for ranger! Cleric would also be a good choice, as would druid. Probably will want to wait until 11th level Ranger (for Distant Strikes, which really is the iconic Horizon Walker feature) for multiclassing, or 12th level for that ASI as a general rule for whatever you decide to dip into.

The Horizon Tripper is really only relevant, as that link states, in a Core-only game. Beyond Core-only, there is almost always a better choice, whatever your character concept. Built right, the Horizon Walker could comfortably act as a melee bruiser, wading in and taking hits, as an assassin that skirts around the edges of the fight before focusing down a key target, or as an archer that stands at the rear and pours arrows into the enemy. Ranger spells are a grab bag of buffs, combat spells, and random utility.
