I don't know why Rust gets compared to DayZ so often. The original version of Rust was an Arma 2 DayZ mod knockoff. When DayZ mod was the hottness a bunch of people tried really hard to get their own zombie survival game going-- seemed like there was a new game out every month. Overall standalone is much better imo. You can enter buildings, many more items, inventory is better, graphics are better, sounds are better, etc. What the mod really does better is set the atmosphere. When playing the mod it just feels like something isn't right, in a good way. The standalone is for people who have played the mod and are ready to "move ahead" and help shape the game to what it aims to be, the reason it's so popular is all the people who have already played and loved the mod "went on" with the Standalone. But even as a MOD, DayZ mod is far more polished than the standalone right now. I obviously know the technical differences between a mod and a standalone. The biggest thing for me is the movement. You have more freedom than you realize in standalone, in the mod it is a struggle to move around with precision. The mod feels more robotic, like you have to do one thing at a time.
