In my experience a large number of high quality archers are the absolute best defense you can have, yeah. I think you'll want to look at the weapons your infantry/cavalry use, shields are good for attacking the walls but I personally feel like strong two-handed weapons are great for pushing back enemies trying to scale the walls.
