Subaru crosstrek auto lock walk away.
The 2018 Crosstrek has a key inside the remote. You press the silver pin to release it. Insert the key into the driver door lock, turn it to lock and unlock, and try again. This cleared the condition for me. I diagnosed this by listening to each door, near the latch, during remote lock and unlock operations.

You will need to un-wrap the key later when away from the car. If the app is on the key, then forget all this.
