About 24-25 grains of 2400 powder approximates the original black powder velocities with a 400 grain bullet. I like 11 grains of Unique behind a 500 gr Lee boolit, my crony says 1100+FPS. I am casting my own 405g Boolit's, using a Lee 405 standard base mold! Using Wheel weights and dropping in water as soon as cast! Loading as poured and not sizing!One issue with the 45-70 is that some powders are more position sensitive in this large case when using loads for cast bullets. I have used some fillers and have had some level of success with them as well. The subject of fillers in the 45-70 is controversial and I am aware of their dangers and advantage. Cary .
