You absolutely can use the bottom. I can get 4 racks of ribs on the lower shelf on the 1050. I purchased larger middle and upper shelves from lss mods and I can comfortable get 12 racks total now. This is with leaving space open on the right side which tends to be hotter slightly. I cook the bottom shelf all the time and never have a problem.
