As long as you have the same version of tModLoader installed and the same mods up to date, you should just be able to host and join through steam (Through the Terraria client). As for recommended mods, some of the main content adding ones seem to be Thorium, Calamity and Tremor, and all are compatible with each other.
If tModLoader doesn't work, of course check for the ports 7777 to be opened assuming your using the default port. The mods should auto download and enable/disable when attempting to join a server, but Tmodloader usually crashes when entering. But, as long as they try again after it crashes straight away, they should join with no problems.I do know that one of the freezes occurred in the Thorium mod in multiplayer and another in single player when exploring the calamity mod abyss. No, the mod is designed for single player right now, my guess it won’t be for another couple months to even a year ( depending on how they work) until It has some compatibility. All bosses freak out and becomes a point where you can’t progress. Me and my friends have been playing it multiplayer and it is very broken.
