Aug 11, 2012 · Short pin protrusion is easy to fix on a 39. If you look at the pin, you'll see a big shoulder at the front where it hits the front of the firing pin slot in the bolt. File a bit off this until the pin sticks out enough, but not enough that it dents the chamber edge. Proceed slowly and preferably with a mike or a good set of calipers. On top of that, it barely clears the bolt face. A new pin ordered from Brownells. The pin was listed as "post 1974" so I was not concerned. Duly delivered and it doesn't fit! On closer looking it doesn't resemble the pin it's supposed to replace. Likewise, the pin in the 39A doesn't resemble the pin in my '73 vintage 39M or even my 1897!

Feb 1, 2014 · The lever positively retracts the firing pin on opening and blocks full movement until it locks the bolt shut. If it DIDN'T move freely, you'd have a problem. Clean the slot the firing pin rides in well, make sure there's no impacted crud where front of the pin's "leg" rides in the bolt and you'll be good.

Here is a pic of the bolt firing pin retaining stud on my 2009 model 39a. Marlin added the retaining stud in 1988. As the picture indicates, the outer edge of the stud is just enough to keep the firing pin from being removed.
