The buses are clean, often air conditioned and most riders have excellent transit etiquette. Bus stops are well marked and orderly.Second, the city has a certain roughness. There are homeless in plain view. There are folks selling socks who can be aggressive. There is garbage, there is dog poop everywhere and a stairwell has a 50-50 chance of smelling like pee. One may say three days is enough for Buenos Aires if you're doing the basics but if you want some day trips like tigre, a ranch, or colonia as you said, you may want to extend your stay. I think most people at this forum will disagree, but I think ten days is enough to visit both cities. I'd allow more days to Buenos Aires than Santiago. Buenos Aires is a bigger city, with a lots of cultural life and very interesting museums. Flying over the Andes when travelling between those cities is an amazing experience.Just north of Buenos Aires' centre there's a place called Tigre which is really calm, tranquile and nice. The Rio de la Plata runs through it and you can go on boats in the river and see the little town. You can catch a train from Retiro station that takes you directly to Tigre in an hour or so. Longer trips (say airport) I ussually tip 10%. Restaurants: 10% if good service, more if exceptional, less if below par. 10% is the custom here. Hotels: Bellboy about 10 pesos, maid about 5 pesos per day, I also tip breakfast waiters about 5 pesos per day, and if concierge /front desk staff were helpful about 10 pesos per day.

The buses were handy, but would only recommend people to fly if the flight is direct. Example, flights from Mendoza, or Salta to Bariloche goes via Buenos Aires.
