It appears the evap tank was put next to the gas tank at least on the 2005 model. I only had to replace the solenoid which came off easlily. In replacing the fuel pump there ...

The fuel level has to be between 1/4 and 3/4 full per the gas gauge for the vacuum leak check to run. There may be some other parameters to be met ...

The sensor may be worn more in the half tank to full tank range and not able to give a reading. You might be able to get just the sensor, but not really sure.GM has a fix for this in the form of TSB #16-NA-164. They basically recalibrate the gauge to read full when it is actually 7/8 full.
