Others that I've really enjoyed, but I'd avoid in your case, are Speed of Doom, the later levels of Scythe and Scythe II, Struggle: Antaresian Legacy, or even Alien Vendetta until you're more comfortable with harder WADs, unless you'd be willing to step down to HMP to hone your skills (which there's no shame in). Maybe the fact of people voting for those old WADs means that those WADs are still good, maybe it's because those WADs just have the advantage of more time to become known.
