It all started ~2 months ago with the common “power steering assist reduced” message popping up upon autostart - mainly at red lights. Figured it was my 3/4 year old battery weakening - no apparent issues with power steering, message always disappears quickly, and no CEL. Recently had to jump it twice within a few days.

I would get the battery replaced. Then see if the PS issue is still present. Some systems--- like AWD will not operate if Voltage is low... and set a message on the DIC. A failed electric steering is much harder to turn than a straight manual because you have to turn the failed electric motor through a gear (or belt) reduction. I found out there was a Recall on the power steering I luckily got it replaced. It is alot to replace the whole steering.
