The reserve is just on the fuel tap itself. It has three positions, on , off and reserve. In the on position your fuel tap will be able to drink about 90% of your fuel tank and then it wont be able to drain anymore, then you must turn your fuel tap to the reserve position and it will be able to drink rest of your tank approx 10% that is left.

It uses the same tank, just opens up a secondary portion of the tank by using a lower valve directly on the petcock. Mine is a 1998 Shadow VT 1100 C. I discovered the easiest way to access the fuel filter was to remove the exhaust, both side panels, and unbolt the cover behind the rear cylinder. Approach it from the right hand side, and will be able to see the filter at the bottom of the frame in front of the rear tire.
