Already have the gun by a matter of chance, but don't know anything specific (pops really needs to stop accidentally bidding on gunbroker). All I know is the barrel is too long for my desired purpose as a recreation of the classic M97.

The original 1897 trench had grooves filed into the barrel to accommodate the screws. The barrel needs the grooves cut in it (as the originals). These grooves are what keep the shield in place under recoil. Without them, it will eventually slide forward.
